Description

Angel, Islington
For centuries, men and women have left their mark here. Some for the better, others for the worse. Angels and demons, saints and criminals, visionaries and conspirators — all have walked these same cobblestones.

Angel. A name that gives nothing away of what this neighbourhood really hides. Little known to tourists, nestled in the historic borough of Islington north of London, Angel is nonetheless one of the oldest and richest in stories in the entire capital. Its earliest streets date back to the 16th century — long before the Underground opened its doors here in 1901 and connected it to the rest of the world.

This tour follows in the footsteps of Angel’s famous residents — politicians, artists, religious figures and more — and leaves you to untangle the angels from the demons, to decide who deserved their halo or their pitchfork.

Highlights

🍻
The Angel Inn
A celebrated inn since the 17th century, an essential stop for travellers heading north and a haunt of colourful characters — and the birthplace of a very famous board game!
🎭
Joseph Grimaldi, king of clowns
Born nearby, Grimaldi revolutionised the art of clowning in the 18th century. His life, between genius and tragedy, is one of London’s most romantic stories.
🎙
Joe Orton, cursed playwright
The enfant terrible of British theatre lived and died here. His defaced library books became works of art in their own right.
The Regent’s Canal
Cut through rock in the 19th century, this waterway crosses the neighbourhood in fascinating silence. The towpath markings, still visible on the stones, are silent witnesses to a hard and vanished era.
