Description

Canonbury, Islington
Canon Burh — the canons’ dwelling. A name that dates back to the 13th century, for a neighbourhood that has never stopped reinventing itself.

Canonbury is the ideal place to understand how London became London. How fields and meadows were gradually transformed into one of the world’s densest metropolises. How the English countryside gave way to bricks, factories, epidemics and modernity.

This tour takes you across the centuries: from brick fields to the Industrial Revolution, from Dickens’s slums to the Italian Futurists, from the arrival of running water in London to George Orwell, by way of cholera, elegant Georgian houses and the shadow of Thomas Cromwell.

An under-explored neighbourhood, a universal story. Essential for anyone who truly wants to understand how London was built.

Highlights

🏛
Canonbury Tower
One of the rare Tudor structures still standing in London, once owned by the canons of St Bartholomew and then by Thomas Cromwell. A 16th-century survivor at the heart of a residential neighbourhood.
💥
Cholera and running water
Canonbury was at the centre of the great Victorian epidemics that forced London to rethink its entire infrastructure. The fascinating story of how modern sanitation was born of catastrophe.
📖
George Orwell
The author of 1984 lived at Canonbury Square in the post-war years — when the neighbourhood was still far from fashionable, long before gentrification made it one of Islington’s most sought-after addresses.
🎨
The Italian Futurists
Canonbury houses a museum dedicated to the Futurists, Italian avant-garde artists who drew inspiration from industrial London — an unexpected international connection.
